What kind of group is Cantigas?
Cantigas Women's Choir, founded in 2002, brings women of all ages together to explore the rich tradition of women's singing. We perform a broad spectrum of global music, both ancient and contemporary.
I am interested in joining Cantigas. What is the audition process?
Please send an email to membership@cantigas.net to get the process started. From there you will be invited to participate in a couple of rehearsals and then have a final audition with the conductor who will have you do some vocalizing exercises.
How do I know what voice section I should be in?
Generally, the Artistic Director will discuss this with you at your audition and place you accordingly.
Is there a cost to join?
Cantigas never wants to turn away members because of cost. There are annual dues of $400 ($200 due in October for the Sep.-Dec. semester and $200 due in February for the Jan.-May semester), and some of this can be made up by selling ads for our Spring Concert. Financial assistance is available and decisions are made on a case by case basis.
When and where do you rehearse?
Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights from 7-9 pm from September to May. We rehearse at St. Matthew’s Trinity Lutheran Church at the corner of 8th and Hudson Streets in Hoboken.
Is there parking nearby?
There is street parking available using the Parkmobile app.
What should I expect at rehearsals?
The director will start promptly at 7 pm with brief warm-up exercises and then move on to working on the repertoire. There is a 15 minute break for announcements, bathroom trips, and snacks. At the end, the group puts the chairs and tables away as directed.
What do I need to bring with me for rehearsal?
Bring a bottle of water, a pencil, and a folder for your music. Some people like to record portions of the evening on a pocket recorder or their phone.
When and where do you perform?
We work toward two main performances, one in December and the other in May. There may be other performances in the community throughout the year. Generally, the performances are held in venues in Hoboken or Jersey City.
How will I be notified if there is a last minute change or cancellation due to bad weather or other unforeseen events?
Group emails will be sent out by 3 pm if there are any last minute changes. In the event that you haven’t received an email by 3 pm and are still unsure, you can check the Cantigas WhatsApp group or reach out to Andrea Sartori at andrea.sartori@cantigas.net.
How will I get the sheet music for the repertoire?
Music is distributed at rehearsal. Additionally, most scores are available on the shared Google Drive.
How will I learn the music?
The directors will go over different sections of the music at rehearsal. There is usually time to ask questions during the rehearsal and break times. Weekly practice time on your own is expected, and there may be additional rehearsals near performance time.
Are there other commitments outside of rehearsals?
Cantigas is largely a member-driven organization. Each member helps with cleanup after rehearsal. If interested, there are many additional ways to get involved including: helping with publicity, soliciting ads, thank you notes for our donors, and more.
I am interested in the group, but don’t know anyone. Will I feel out of place?
Cantigas is a welcoming and friendly group. In addition to rehearsals, there are social activities such as Cantigrub, where you can meet in small group gatherings for a drink or meal, occasional after rehearsal gatherings, end of season parties and more. These activities are all optional based on your interest and availability.
What do I do if I have a question or complaint?
You can speak with your section leader, or alternatively someone from the membership committee. Members of the Board and committees can be found in your welcome packet. If needed, you can always reach out to Andrea (andrea.sartori@cantigas.net) for questions and she can direct you to the correct person!
How can I get more involved?
There are many ways to get involved with Cantigas. You can volunteer to help at any of the events throughout the year. You can join Cantigrub which gives you a chance to socialize with other members outside of rehearsals. You can join a committee and become more involved with the planning and inner workings of Cantigas.
